
Jessie Zhang
Jessie Zhang is a grade 10 student from Western Canada High School. She started piano lessons at the age of 5. She studied with Kathy Dornian for 5 years and her current teacher is Krzysztof Jablonski. Jessie is a student of Mount Royal conservatory’s academy for young artists.
Jessie possesses an Associates diploma (ARCT) and Licentiate Performance Diploma (LRCM) from RCM by the age of 14. She was awarded RCM Provincial Gold Medal in her Grade 9 piano exam. She has been selected to represent Calgary at the Alberta Provincial Music Festival in the “Senior” category and placed second in 2019. Over the last few years, she has consistently achieved success in piano in the Calgary Performing Arts Festival. She placed second in Division II in 2018 Steinway Junior Piano Competition. She was the recipient of the 2017 Contemporary Showcase national award - The Mary Hildebrand Memorial Award.
Jessie has also taken in piano masterclasses with such notable teachers as Meng-Chieh Liu, Ingrid Fliter, Alexander Braginsky, David Moroz, Jamie Parker, Konstantin Shamray, Kyoto Hashimoto, Luca Buratto, Stephane Lemelin, Marilyn Engle and Glen Montgomery. She took part in summer music programs in Calgary, Valhalla and New York.
Jessie started learning Erhu at the age of 8 with Yumeng Wang (from Central Conservatory of Music, China). She joined the Calgary Chinese Orchestra and CCO Youth Ensemble in 2018 and participated in the Calgary Chinese New Year Concert and Calgary Chinese Orchestra Annual Concert. She has consistently won first prize in the Calgary Performing Arts Festival in the past few years.
During her spare time, she enjoys playing the flute and violin, playing badminton, listening to music and reading.
